rat brain surgery!

Today, i watched the brain surgery of a rat for the first time!

Today, at lab, I got to watch as the researcher implanted 2 wires into the rat's brain so that she could stimulate the specific structure without damaging or affecting any other neural areas. The whole process took only about 20 minutes. It was funny watching the groggy rats coming out of anesthesia. Their legs couldn't hold them up, so they looked like they were swimming around the bottom of their cages. Very cute ^. ^

Direct Patient Care + dead sea salt scrub!

Today, I tried 2 new things!!

I got to partake in direct patient care at the ER and I used a dead sea salt scrub BOTH for the first time!

First New Thing:

via sciencephoto.com
At work today, I got to hold the ultrasound probe and stabilize the needle while the resident drained a wound! It was so freaking exciting! I can't wait to get to med school!!!!

Second New Thing:

the one we used was not green, but it had similar consistency.
Today, my sister and I used a dead sea salt scrub! It felt sooo cleansing and soothing while using it and my skin feels super baby soft after. WOO! ^. ^

IHOP cheese scramble

Today, I had an IHOP cheese scramble for the first time!

It was HUGE. Just as I started eating, a really big guy walked by and wished me good luck finishing the meal. He said he just packed half of it to bring home. I barely ate 1/3 of it. It was super satisfying, especially after a night out, but it's sitting a bit heavy in my stomach ^. ^

Saturday, June 11: Romper!

Today, I wore a romper for the first time!

the one i wore is similar to the middle one...mayhaps a bit shorter ^. ^
I went out for a friend's bday and wore a romper! It was very cute and fun ^. ^

Friday, June 10: Yankees Stadium

Today, I went to watch the yankees live in yankee stadium for the first time!

shin-soo choo!

It started raining a bit through the game, which made it more fun. The rain looked like snow and super pretty, I think because of the lighting. I also saw Soo-shin Choo play! All in all, very fun and very awesome. (I think I like Yankees Stadium better than Fenway o.o)

Mouse Decapitation...

Today, I saw a mouse get decapitated in the name of science for the first time!

it really was just as cute :(

It was actually pretty sad to hear the mouse give its last squeak. But then later, I got to clean and refill the water/alcohol bottles for the mice downstairs.

(I didn't do anything new yesterday... GASP! terrible! xP)

Verilux Lamp!

Today, I used the Verilux lamp for the first time ever!

Verilux Lamp!

I've been going pretty much nonstop between golf, work, lab, med school apps, and play for the past month, and especially this week. Today, I got home from the lab/running errands/picking up my sister around 4pm and wanted to PTFO. Due to my insomnia, napping is not an option.

I napped anyway...but only for 50 minutes! which is super short compared to my usual 3 hour naps. I still wasn't feeling too great after my nap, so I went to my desk and used the Verilux lamp that my sister recently gave me.

It works so fantastically. I just sat in front of it for 30 minutes while sending some emails and I felt so much better. I didn't feel sleepy and my body stopped aching. AMAZING!

Monday, June 6: Zydeco Music!!

Today, I listened/danced to Zydeco music for the first time!

I had late tea with my friend, who introduced me tonight to Zydeco music! It is impossible not to dance to and so happy/upbeat! Found my summer music obsession ^. ^

Sunday, June 5: Calculating Golf Scores!

Today, I calculated my golf score for the first time!!

I got golf lessons in middle school, but didn't really go out to the field until a few years ago. Today, for the first time, I calculated my score. Up until now, I've been keeping score, but have been putting more weight on how well I hit the ball (how good the contact I made was) rather than my numerical score. But I played well enough that I calculated my score! 139 :)

Saturday, June 4: Pinball Machines!!

Today, I played a real pinball game via a real pinball machine for the first time!!

I went to a house bbq/party thrown by one of the attendings where i work. Apparently, one of his hobbies is collecting, selling, and buying arcade games including pinball. As a good asian girl, i never went to the arcade when i was little and never played very many arcade/video games. but not on Saturday!!

I went all out, playing the different arcade games, including the pinball machine! It's harder than computer pinball, but not by much ^. ^ very fun!

Friday, June 5, 2011: Webster Hall

Yesterday, I went to Webster Hall for the first time!! It was also my first non-campus, non-boston, non-classical concert!!

from my samsung galaxy phone camera

I went to see Portugal. The Man with 2 UMDNJ lovies and it was, in a word, AMAZING. The band was so talented, the music was soul-stirring, and the crowd, fun/full of cute boys ^. ^ hahaha

in all seriousness, if I could relive just one night of my life, last night's concert would make top 3. if ever the chance to see this band live comes up, GRAB IT.

Research Lab

Today, I got into a neurology research lab for the first time!

They mostly study the effects of alcohol and alcohol dependence in the molecular pathways in the brain and in motor neurons. They do both in vitro and in vivo studies. I start next Tuesday. I'm so excited!!!!!

Wednesday, June 1: Leisure Driving!

I got home late last night from a long shift at work and went straight to bed. BUT! on my way home, I drove home slowly with the windows down and the music low and appreciated the night drive for the first time! It was actually pretty amazing. I smelled honeysuckle for most of the drive, then a skunk, and then more honeysuckle, and then the waterfalls that I drive by almost every day. I never smelled my way home before and it was really, really relaxing and surprisingly (or maybe not) inspiring. I plan on doing it more often, especially on my drives home from late shifts when the roads are pretty empty.
